Tonia Antoniazzi, Welsh Labour's candidate for Gower, has challenged Byron Davies for standing up for the super-rich and failing  the rest of us

Tonia said that she has listened to many Gower voters who are currently struggling and are afraid for their future.  She said, “I know that people are concerned with local issues but they are also concerned with the big issues that affect most families in the UK.  Byron Davies has campaigned on a number of local issues which are clearly important and has criticised both the local Council and Welsh Government but has not been able to answer those many working families who are finding life hard at the moment and struggling to make ends meet.

“Too many of us are in low-paid and insecure work. Too many of us fear our children will not enjoy the same opportunities that we have.

“We have heard about some people who are in work but still need to use food banks and there are many older people financially supporting their children and grandchildren.”

“Why did he vote to public services, to cut £30 a week from disabled people and why did he vote to rob thousands of Gower women from their pension?”

Ms Antoniazzi also questioned the MP’s voting record on measures to tackle tax avoidance and tax evasion.

Tonia Antoniazzi said: "You and I pay our taxes. So should big companies and the super-rich.

"In Parliament, the Conservative MP for Gower has had the chance to take action on tax avoidance and evasion to ensure that the very wealthy pay their fair share. This would have meant more money for the NHS and local services.

"Instead, the MP has consistently fought the corner of the super-rich and voted against every measure to help deal with avoidance and evasion.

"If elected to represent Gower, I promise to be in the corner of ordinary working people."

Dear Editor,

I was surprised to see Byron Davies on your letters pages claiming that he had not voted in favour of fracking underneath Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (Fri 19th May).

Allow me to refresh his memory.

On 16th December 2015, Byron Davies cast his vote in favour of allowing companies to place their drilling rigs on the edge of AONBs and then to frack horizontally underneath them.

Byron's voting history, of which he claims to be proud, is all on the public record. Alongside his support for fracking, his record includes repeated votes to block action on tax avoidance and evasion, and votes against abolishing the 'tampon tax.' I am not sure this what the people of Gower expected when they sent him to be their voice in Westminster.

I am a well-respected professional woman who is hard working and approachable. I do not base my literature on untruths. I only deal with the facts.

Yours,

Tonia Antoniazzi

The Gower regeneration was going so well…until we returned a Tory MP

Voting Tory will end up costing the earth.

As residents of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the people of Gower know that only too well.

A vote for Labour candidate Tonia Antoniazzi is the only choice for those who care about the fragile peninsula environment.

The track record of Tory candidate Byron Davies and his political masters in London is dismal.

They have been driven by a will to put big business first.

Davies voted AGAINST measures to prevent climate change.

And his failure to oppose fracking in AONBs is against the interests of Gower residents.

Tonia, the only female candidate in an all-male field, will stand up for issues the voters care about.

She is a lead campaigner for the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon.

The development would make the area a world leader in renewable energy.

It would guarantee jobs and energy security for generations to come.

The Green party is not running in the Gower constituency.

Tonia, says: the lure of party donations appears to be more important than the safety of his constituency.

Tonia backs nursing recruitment in Wales

Tonia Antoniazzi, Welsh Labour's general election candidate for Gower, has welcomed the launching of a major new campaign promoting Wales as a fantastic country for nurses to train, work and live.

The campaign starts with the announcement that NHS Bursaries for eligible student nurses, midwives and allied health professionals will continue to be available in Wales in 2018/19. In England, bursaries have been scrapped by the Tory government.

The bursary will be based upon individuals committing in advance to taking up the opportunity to work in Wales, post qualification, for a period of two years.

The recruitment campaign forms part of the Welsh Labour Government’s commitment to take action to attract and train more nurses, GPs and other health professionals across Wales.  It follows the successful recent GP recruitment campaign, which saw a 16% increase in GP training places filled.

Tonia Antoniazzi said:

“This campaign is great news for the Welsh NHS and patients in Gower.

“It is signals the Welsh Labour Government’s commitment to the training and development of nurses, midwives and other professionals working in our NHS. Compare that to the approach of the Tories who have scrapped nursing bursaries in England, and whose language on Brexit is frightening healthcare professionals away.

“Gower is a great place to live and train and I look forward to seeing the positive impact on numbers of nurses midwives and allied health professionals in our Swansea hospitals."

Notes to editors:

The international campaign will target newly qualified and experienced registered nurses, as well as those who may be considering returning to the profession.  The Train, Work, Live campaign will be represented at the RCN Congress in Liverpool from May 13 -17.

It is supported with a single telephone point of contact for all enquiries and online through thewww.trainworklive.wales website. People interested in working in Wales can ring: 01443 848 576 for more details.

Gower Labour Candidate Tonia Antoniazzi tackles Byron Davies on the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon

In his most recent newsletter, Byron Davies, the Gower Conservative Candidate for the General Election said that he was ‘looking forward’ to fighting for residents to ensure among other things, the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon.

It has been well-reported that the Swansea tidal lagoon programme offers a significant economic opportunity for Gower, Swansea and Wales and it seems strange that Gower’s MP has said that he was ‘looking forward’ to fighting for a project that Swansea has been waiting for with baited breath for over a year.

Last January, former energy minister Charles Hendry published his findings into the proposed project off the coast of Swansea, saying that it should be the first in a series of larger lagoons around the UK coast - creating a new £15bn industry in tidal energy.

Four months later, and Swansea is still waiting for the decision of the UK Government.

Tonia Antoniazzi, Labour’s candidate for Gower expressed surprise at Byron Davies’ stance. “ Rather than look ahead to a fight, Byron and the Tory Government should have delivered by now on the promises made to invest in the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon.

Having read the Hendry report in detail, and having worked on a Welsh Baccalaureate project with my pupils on the issue of tidal lagoons, it is clear that this is an investment in our future generations, our children and our grandchildren. This is about employment and opportunities in Gower and Wales and it is a lifeline to Wales.

As an old proverb says: Promises are like the full moon, if they are not kept at once they diminish day by day. There is no never ending pot of private investment that can keep the project on hold until Teresa May’s Government decides to invest. The BBC reported in February this year that Tidal Lagoon Power needed an answer within 6 – 8 weeks. If we do not have a commitment from the Tories in the next three months then we are under threat of losing this investment. “

Welsh Labour’s candidate for Gower responds to Theresa May’s comments on fox hunting

Reacting to Theresa May's support for a return to fox-hunting, Welsh Labour's Gower candidate, Tonia Antoniazzi said:

“Welsh Labour’s position on fox hunting remains the same as always – it’s an outdated, barbaric practice which has nothing to do with pest control and everything to do with bloodlust and cruelty.

“Theresa May’s comments show how out of touch the Tories are with the people of Wales, who by a huge margin support Welsh Labour’s continued opposition to fox hunting. On June 8th, people in Wales will have the chance to reject Tory plans like this – and the only way to do that is voting Welsh Labour.”

Tonia welcomes a fall in the number of young Welsh people not in education, employment or training

Welsh Labour’s candidate for Gower, Tonia Antoniazzi, has welcomed new figures which show that the number of young people not in education, employment or training in Wales fell during 2016.

Tonia said: “These latest figures show the difference that a Welsh Labour Government makes.

“Whilst young people are amongst those bearing the brunt of the UK Government’s austerity agenda, Labour in Wales is investing in our future.

“I have seen the impact that schemes like Jobs Growth Wales have had on the lives of young people, including in Gower, and am proud that our party has not turned our back on them.”

Figures from the Annual Population Survey (APS) show that:

  • In the twelve months ending 31 December 2016, 8.5% of 16-18 year olds were estimated to be NEET compared with 9.6% at the end of 2015 - a fall of 1,100 young people (9,100 young people compared with 10,200).
  • During the same period ending 31 December 2016, 17.1% of 19-24 year olds(42,000 people) were estimated to be NEET, against 18.6% (46,600) at the year ending 31 December 2015.
  • The number of Year 11 leavers from schools in Wales known to be NEET also decreased between 2015 and 2016 and now stands at 2.0% (619) compared to 2.8% (911) in 2015.

A number of schemes supported by the Welsh Labour Government are helping young people into work, including Jobs Growth Wales. Supported by the European Structural Fund, Jobs Growth Wales provides unemployed young people aged 16-24 with a job opportunity for six months. Since it launched in 2012, almost 15,000 job vacancies were filled through the programme, with a further 2,365 filled by March 2017.
